Just because you have diabetes doesn’t mean that you should start eating special foods. In fact, if most people would eat like a diabetic we would have a much healthier generation of people in America. A diabetic diet should simply consist of eating a variety of foods in moderate amounts and eating on a schedule of 4-6 times a day. Eat foods containing low sugar including and emphasizing vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Diabetics need to eat foods that are low on the Glycemic Index (GI) – foods that contain fruits, vegetables, and many whole grains. GOOD! High GI foods are refined sugars and foods with high fats. BAD! Consistency is key because your body responds to excess calories and fat by creating an undesirable rise in blood sugar. Rather than a restrictive diet, a diabetic’s diet is a healthy eating plan that is naturally rich in nutrients, low in fat calories, and low in refined sugar!
